It’s Evolutionary
Psychology, Stupid
  • A personal journey
  • to and around the MoQ

  • By Ian Glendinning ( www.psybertron.org )
  • (MoQ Conference, Liverpool, 7th July 2005)

Generic Information Models
  • Early 90’s the sharp end - data inconsistencies.
  • Late 90’s information modelling - with a passion.

  • Philosophical basis …
  • Metaphor & idiom …
  • Whole life identity … Trigger’s Broom
  • Pragmatic compromise …
  • Software implementation process
  • “Why IT projects fail” …
6
Mid 2001 - Something’s wrong
  • Rational, objective, model vs “buzzing, booming, confusion of paradox”, etc.
  • Tennis, elbow, foot ….
…. research by word association & curiosity
  • AI + Complexity + Uncertainty
  • What, why & how do we (really) know (anything) ?
  • 9/11 – the web and web-logging (www.psybertron.org)
  • Ever increasing spirals
    • Brain / mind dualism, linguistics, metaphor, general philosophy
    • Chaos, fuzzy / alternative logics, statistics, Bayesian methods
    • Cognitive science, ethnography, evolution, patterns
    • Quantum physics, quantum information, quantum genetics
    • … and so on and on and on ….. But leading where ?

7
Dawnings
  • Much bigger than business decision-making
  • Rational objective decisions & moral justifications
    … concerning massively complex issues
  • Meta-stable interactions of dynamic processes
  • Information intimately involved in “reality”
8
My Seed Crystal ?
  • Henry Stapp / Brian Josephson (Nobel Laureate)
    • "... the idea from eastern philosophy that in certain states of consciousness the subjective states of mind closely reflect objective reality ... and ... the parallel between quantum and biological views is not that the former underlies the latter on a human scale, but that both are in fact manifestations of some other underlying physics.“

  • Quantum physics and eastern philosophy on a human scale – from a serious scientific source !
  • Did not compute – then the penny dropped.
  • Michael Talbot >> Fritjof Capra >> ???
…what was the name of that book again, ???
…. the one about engineering with Zen in the title  … ?

Living with Bob
  • Statement of the obvious, unoriginal ?
  • Layered model of dynamic progression
    (meta-stable layers, dynamic interactions)
  • And, Quality itself … the S-I-O triplet that affirms there’s more to life than objectivity.
  • Context & Intent ? … know the man
  • All this in a moving work of literature ? …
“literature is a superior form of knowledge to science” (Dupuy, AI / Cybernetics) –> never ending reading list.
  • “The relevance of ZMM to our present-day situation … impossible to exaggerate.” (Willis, MD, UK GP)
  • “Traditional scientific method has always been at the very best 20-20 hindsight …. it can’t tell you where you ought to go.” ZMM quote, Snowden (Cynefin, ex-IBM)
10
To cut a long story short …
  • Metaphysics / Incompleteness
    • Pragmatic, live with it.
  • “Science” of Consciousness & Mind
    • AI / Cybernetic boost to the subject
    • Tractable in “physics”

  • Evolution / Maslow & MoQ / Memes
    • Ref - Heylighen. Blackmore and “Quality of Explanation”
11
Where has MoQ got me ?
  • Quality – the most fundamental “atoms” of stuff are interactions. (In some sense the interactions themselves are simply communications of information.)
  • Dynamism – the most fundamental world-view is a process view. (Treat all “fixed” situations as meta-stable equilibrium of dynamic events.)
  • Evolution – the long-run overview of the “organisation” of all these static and dynamic things is evolution. (The patterns of things that exist long enough to be given names are “species”, both genetic and memetic. The vast majority of ongoing evolution in human scale affairs is memetic – It’s Evolutionary Psychology, Stupid.)

The dreams that stuff is made of ....
( Thomas Disch / David Moser, after the bard )
  • “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible. ” (T E Lawrence  / Faisal ibn Saud)
